I Serve The God Of Cardi B

(Art By Samona Lena)

I and Cardi B have something in common:We serve a very living God; both of us are daughters of the Most High.

I do not say this with the typical Nigerian hustler spirit that has a penchant for hunting out "connection"; hobnobbing and seeking lineage to all things successful. No. My brethrenship with Sister B is real.

How do you go from being a twenty-five year old former gangster and stripper from Bronx, to vying for Grammy nominations with Jay-Z? (Yes, Jay-freaking-Z!)

Is my God not renowned for raising down and outers from the dunghill and placing them on Billboard No.1? I do not call her down and outer because of her stripper-past. Stripping actually took her out of an abusive relationship and gave her enough money to go back to school. Though she dropped out to hustle full-time, it all paid off and now, she's sitting on a pot of shmoney at the end of the rainbow. Talk of a God who turns everything around for the good of his daughters, like Sister B and I.

My past isn't half as colorful as hers, but everyone who is working hard at their craft and hoping for some miraculous breakthrough can find solace in Sister B's story.

Cardi-B's tales of woes and triumph is testimony-time material. The type of testimony you hear in church that lifts you off you feet, screaming Hallelujah! as you march forward  to drop seed in the offering box. The type of narrative that restores faith in a God who rewards diligence. Yes, she worked her ass off, hopping from studio to studio, begging to perform in shows and having to prove that she was much more that a big-mouthed Instagram celebrity.

And one thing I have learnt from this my christian sister is, there is no hustle God cannot bless if only you remain diligent at it. He does not resist the hard worker, he gives grace to the hustler-whether you are a stripper, a cobbler, a creative...whatever it is. The problem many have? they are too concerned about the nature of another's craft that they miss how long the person toiled before making gold...or platinum records.

Moral of this testimony? Keep digging. Gold is around the corner.
